Seussical Sketches

Concept & Creative Vision

Inspired by the exuberant imagination of Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904–1991)—better known as Dr. Seuss—this family-friendly work blends contemporary dance and American classical ballet to capture the tilted worlds and sly wisdom of his books.

Dr. Seuss began as a political cartoonist before writing and illustrating more than sixty children’s titles, creating beloved characters such as the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, and Sam-I-Am.

Using his signature wonky lines and rhythmic word-play as a springboard, the choreography will conjure a stage of playful angles and purposeful mischief. Dancers become living sketches: heads cocked, limbs curved, colours popping in Seussian fashion. Though subtly narrative at heart, the piece invites children and adults alike to discover the deeper moral threads that run through Seuss’s work—environmental care, curiosity, and courage—while delighting in sheer visual whimsy.

The piece will be a collage or Multiverse if you will, of Sussical Characters interacting with each other with slight nod to their respective narratives, however the focus will be on dance and particularly the style of dance. I want to draw a mix of styles from choreographers like George Balanchine, Jerome Robbin’s , Justin Peck and William Forsyth.

The Music will echo the likes of Gustav Holst, The Planets, Op. 32: IV. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jolility, and or Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43 by Sergei Rachmaninov.

Set  and costume will be minimal using lighting to enhance storytelling.  emphasise will be on colourful costume nodding effectively to the Seuss silhouette .

Note: The vision of creating such a piece would be to eventually create full length Ballets like ‘How the Grinch stole Christmas’ (A Nutcracker substitute) and ‘The Lorax’.

Costumes can be adjusted to fit to budget. At this stage Suessical Scetches will be more about story telling and the style of dance.

I want to encourage the dancers to become live animation like a cartoon.
